Winchester Read Easy Adults Awarded for Overcoming Literacy Challenges

Adults who never learnt to read have been recognised for their hard work in gaining literacy at an award ceremony. The ceremony, held at St Peter’s Church, Jewry Street, on Tuesday, June 24, celebrated those who have been learning the joys of the written word with Read Easy. The event was attended by the Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Sudhakar Achwal, as well as author Claire Fuller, one of the charity’s patrons, who also presented certificates to the new readers.

Having attended Exeter House special school and Salisbury College, Mr Bowden could only read short words and has struggled with longer ones throughout his life. He started volunteering as a porter at Salisbury District Hospital and is now working as a cleaner for Waitrose.

South and East Wiltshire Read Easy was first created in May 2022 following months of hard work by Clare Potter and Caroline Finch. The pair had both independently been looking at how they could help adults to read, with the initial plan to teach in prisons. However, as there are no prisons within easy travelling distance to Salisbury, they turned their attention to the national charity Read Easy.
